The ANK took this a bit further, it was the least bright I've ever heard digital sound. The Line Magnetic was the first DAC in which I could switch from vinyl to digital and not feel like I entered a different universe - I don't compare the sound to vinyl, but it didn't sound at all digital to me. Now we get to the part of the story where I actually found DACs that sounded significantly and pleasantly different from all the rest - the Line Magnetic 502CA, and the ANK DAC 2.1. Then Schiit unveiled their multibit line, and I thought "oooh - based on the marketing material, here we finally have a DAC that is actually doing something different, this is worth a shot! So I buy a multibit Schiit and no, it sounds like everything else at the price point.

I've used many DACs over the years, many of them made by Schiit, and the vast majority of them sounded either identical to one another or sounded different in a way that was just that - different, but not better. Seems like Border Patrol or Audio Note DAC have different goals than absolute neutrality/transparency, and thus may be "apples & oranges" versus something from Schiit or Benchmark?Ĭlick to expand. What said is you would be unlikely to see where your $1200 went in a head to head comparison. But I can see an advantage to getting a DAC with a tube stage or other pleasing coloration that could provide an alternative that you can switch between to suit your preference from disc to disc. For example, if the Parasound HINT DAC is already very good with regard to neutrality/transparency/low-noise, I can see how buying an external with those same goals could be underwhelming.

This thread (and reading the Stereophile review of Border Patrol DAC) has me wondering about whether the external DAC approach should be neutrality and transparency, versus adding some pleasing coloration/distortion that would be an alternative to a DAC we already have in our system that perhaps is closer to neutrality/transparency. I haven't heard either, so I'm on the sidelines seeking first hand knowledge from others who've explored/researched this topic more than I have. I'm also curious about whether Schiit could significantly beat a Parasound integrated DAC. Click to expand. You've done A/B tests of the Parasound HINT DAC versus the Schiit DAC, and can confirm that they sound significantly different from each other?
